ESG, the UK’s leading inspection, compliance and geotechnical services provider, will be hosting a forum reflecting on current issues affecting the rail sector, from legislation updates to health issues.

Date: 23 September 2014

Time: 9.30am to 3.30pm

Location: The Grand Central Hotel, 99 Gordon Street, Glasgow, GS1 3SF

Speakers: John Gillespie, HM Assistant Chief Inspector of Railways, ORR; David Wright, Occupational Hygienist, ESG; Denis Morgan, Asbestos Technical Manager, ESG; Paul Sear, Legionella Technical Manager, ESG

Taking place in Glasgow on 23 September 2014, the day builds on the success of ESG’s previous railway forums, and will include a number of speakers both from ESG and also from the Office of Rail Regulation.

The event has been designed to be of interest to all those working in the rail sector, including those from train operating companies, track and infrastructure operators, facilities managers and rail contractors.

The event will be co-chaired by Business Development Managers, Susan Cassells (asbestos) and Sarah Cartwright (environmental), from ESG’s Compliance Division. Attendees will hear talks on a wide variety of topics, including:

  • An update on the Office of Rail Regulation’s occupational health programme and information on stress management (John Gillespie, HM Assistant Chief Inspector of Railways, ORR)
  • Hand-arm vibration syndrome, cases of which continue to dominate in the occupational diseases reported to the ORR under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013) (David Wright, Occupational Hygienist, ESG)
  • Rail sector case studies concerning the identification and management of asbestos-containing materials during works (Denis Morgan, Asbestos Technical Manager, ESG)
  • An update on the new legionella guidance and how this applies to the rail sector (Paul Sear, Legionella Technical Manager, ESG)
  • An update from the Ballast Working Group

In addition, there will also be a mini-exhibition and networking opportunities, providing attendees with updates on legislation, best practice guidance and industry developments.

Lunch will be provided and places are limited, so please confirm attendance at the forum or recommend a colleague to attend by emailing
