SOCOTEC was among a select group of businesses invited to 10 Downing Street to mark the passing of a landmark piece of employment legislation.
Lisa Massey, HR Director at SOCOTEC UK and Ireland, was present as the Employment Rights Act was unveiled.
Lisa has worked closely with the British Chambers of Commerce’s employer network, where she has been actively involved in examining the implications of the new legislation for businesses, as well as assessing how organisations are prepared for the changes ahead.
The Employment Rights Act represents one of the most significant pieces of employment legislation in recent years, introducing enhanced protections and rights for workers while setting new expectations for employers.
Speaking about the significance of the Act, Lisa acknowledged both the opportunities and challenges it presents:
We need to make sure that the new legislation helps to optimise the number of people in jobs - jobs for people in every part of society, whether that's a school leaver or someone reaching the twilight of their career looking for something flexible and part-time.
We need to make sure the legislation supports that and doesn't get in the way. Businesses are nervous and there is a lot of work to do. We don't want this to be a burden, an extra cost or a distraction from the job in hand, which is building successful businesses not just for ourselves but for the UK economy, because success creates jobs.
The Act’s launch event featured presentations from key figures behind the legislation, including Angela Rayner MP - who has been instrumental in driving the legislation forward - and Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, who expressed pride in the government's achievement in bringing this significant piece of legislation to fruition.
The invitation reflects SOCOTEC's position as a people-centric organisation where workforce development and employee welfare are business priorities.
Lisa added:
Our product is our people. The services our people offer define our business at SOCOTEC, and we focus on them being the core resource, the key assets to enable us to deliver the excellence and expertise that our clients demand.
SOCOTEC has long championed progressive employment practices, investing significantly in leadership development, apprenticeships, and creating clear career pathways for employees at all levels.
For SOCOTEC, the Act aligns with existing values around creating great workplaces, but Lisa is clear that successful implementation across UK business will require partnership, preparation, and pragmatism.
Lisa said:
The real objective of this legislation is making workplaces better for everyone while ensuring British business remains successful.
That collaborative approach - between employers, employees, unions, and government - will determine whether we achieve both goals.
