SOCOTEC Building Control offers up to £6,000 in employee referral scheme upgrade amid major industry reform

    Tue 06/02/2026 - 15:40

SOCOTEC Building Control Limited has announced the enhancement of its industry-leading employee referral scheme, which will see its employees benefit from a significant financial windfall, as the sector prepares for fundamental reform.

The recent publication of the Building Control Independent Panel (BCIP) report and subsequent government response has outlined a roadmap for Building Control reforms in England.

The report aims to address long-standing concerns about system fragmentation and independent oversight within the sector with a range of government directives set to roll out, including £55m over the next three years to build capacity and enable more skilled RBIs.

SOCOTEC’s move to enhance its successful scheme coincided with the report’s release and offers a referral bonus of up to £6,000 for Registered Building Inspectors (RBIs).

The upgrade to the scheme not only reflects the importance of securing qualified professionals, but also the value of the scheme with a huge 40% of all Building Control hires joining through employee referrals.

The initiative runs until September 2026, and forms part of a comprehensive 10-week recruitment campaign.

"Our employee referrals are best in class at 40% of our total hires for SOCOTEC Building Control. This success has been behind our decision to upgrade the scheme for our staff over the summer months.

This success rate outperforms industry benchmarks, and we see it this way: if our trusted experts and professionals are referring other experts and professionals to us they truly believe SOCOTEC is a great place to work and this action is enabling strong organic growth. Referred or ‘recommended’ employees stay and have a strong retention rate. They feel more connected to the business and quickly become a part of the SOCOTEC family."

Lisa Massey, HR Director at SOCOTEC UK & Ireland

The enhanced referral scheme introduces a tiered bonus structure reflecting the complexity and seniority of building inspector classifications, going from a fee of £6,000 for Class 3 Inspectors referrals, to £5,000 for Class 2F Inspectors, £4,000 for Class 2E/2D Inspectors and other classifications rounding out at £3,000.

This structure underscores the demand for senior-level inspectors since the introduction of the Building Safety Act 2022, which fundamentally reformed building regulations to prioritise safety and accountability.

"Since the  Building Safety Act was introduced in 2022, there has been a wave of change in our industry. When you couple that with a generation of Registered Building Inspectors coming to the end of their career, it has been a challenge to recruit for their replacements.

Our improved referral initiative specifically targets recruitment across England and Wales, with a particular emphasis on expanding our presence in regions such as London, East Anglia, the Southern Counties, the Midlands, Wales and Northern England, all of which are locations where we have ambition to continue growing the business.

We are also committed to developing our current team of surveyors within Scotland, who operate under different legislation but continue to help support our clients and business plans."

Kevin Savage, Managing Director at SOCOTEC Building Control

In England and Wales we have many RBI’s who are continuing to develop, under a supported CPD programme to achieve their ambition to progress through the RBI classifications.

The BCIP report found that while building control professionals demonstrate considerable skill and commitment, systemic issues have prevented the consistent delivery of their public safety role.

"At SOCOTEC Building Control, we recognise these reforms represent years of careful implementation, and we're committed to contributing meaningfully to the conversation as the industry works towards stronger, more effective regulation of building work."

Kevin Savage, Managing Director at SOCOTEC Building Control, added
