Plate load testing to bear certainty and ensure soils carry the weight. Adopt a data-drive approach for informed decisions in your project's design and execution.

Does your project require a plate load test? Plate load testing plays a crucial role in assessing the in-situ strength and deformation characteristics of soils and construction materials.

Through this test, we can determine a material's capacity to withstand a specified load or estimate its ultimate load-bearing ability. Our experienced team applies the desired load onto the test surface and carefully measures the resulting deformation, providing valuable insights into the material's behaviour.

Furthermore, this versatile test offers additional benefits for foundation design. By conducting variations of the plate load test, we can derive various design parameters such as elasticity, ultimate bearing capacity, shear strength, and deformation. This information is invaluable for making informed decisions when it comes to placing crane pads.

We understand the importance of accurate and reliable data in delivering successful projects. Our client-focused approach ensures that our plate load tests are tailored to meet your specific requirements, providing you with actionable information for your project's success.

Incremental Plate Load Testing Process – How do you test plate bearings?

Our team of expert engineers can carry out an incremental plate load test that adheres to the industry standard BS 1377 Part: 1990. This test is designed to provide you with valuable insights into the behaviour of soils and construction materials.

During the test, we utilise a kentledge, typically a tracked excavator weighing at least 10 tonnes or more (depending on the plate size and maximum load requirement). This kentledge applies a specified load onto a circular steel plate, which is placed on a flat surface. We apply the load in five equal increments, carefully recording the resulting deformation at each stage.

The comprehensive test report we provide will indicate both the total applied load and the corresponding deformation. This data is essential in evaluating the performance and characteristics of the material being tested, enabling you to make informed decisions for your project.

Determining Ev1 and Ev2 (Strain Modulus) from Plate Load Test

Our team are able to offer you expertise in the dual cycle load test. This specialised test is typically conducted following our in-house method, which is based on respected German or French standards.

During the dual cycle load test, we perform two plate load tests at the same location, carefully implementing a prescribed set of at least six load increments for each test. This comprehensive approach allows us to gather accurate and reliable data on the material's load and deformation characteristics.

From the test results, we extract valuable information regarding the strain (or deformation) moduli Ev1 and Ev2. These moduli provide insights into the material's behaviour and performance. To ensure precise measurements, we employ the plate method or the Lightweight Deflectometer, which greatly enhances our ability to determine the modulus of deformation (Ev2).

    CBR from Plate Load Test

The CBR value of the ground can be calculated using the load applied to reach a deformation of 1.25mm.
