Impulse Geophysics History

Founded in 1991, Impulse Geophysics Ltd began as a consultancy for sub-surface investigations, quickly becoming a leader in Impulse Radar (Ground Penetrating Radar – GPR) applications. With their current expertise and breadth of equipment they are able to cover all aspects of GPR, from the location of buried services/features to the varying construction of UK pavements.

Under the leadership of Bob Milligan, the company pioneered high-speed Impulse Radar surveys on UK roads, becoming the go-to provider for consultants, contractors, National Highways, and local authorities. Independent trials by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in the early 1990s confirmed Impulse’s unmatched data quality and accuracy.

Impulse Geophysics is known for simplifying complex geophysical techniques and delivering clear, user-friendly results. Through customer needs and internal innovation, the company developed their proprietary Roadshow System in the 1995. With the evolution of technology, both software and hardware, Impulse Geophysics continued to stay at the forefront of the industry, now providing ultra high definition 4K imagery through its online Roadshow platform.

In July 2024, Impulse Geophysics was acquired by SOCOTEC UK, strengthening SOCOTEC’s geophysical and transport sector services.

We have acquired Impulse Geophysics Ltd, an industry leading provider of 4K Digital Video and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) services based in Bedford.

Using technology and AI, Impulse specialises in Asset Management and Condition Inspection in the Infrastructure industry, allowing clients to visualise and plan their networks/schemes effectively and safely.

The company, which has strong experience and links with many key Infrastructure industries, will further strengthen our range of services in the Infrastructure Asset Monitoring area.
