Saturday 27th September 2025 marked the 200th anniversary of railways in the United Kingdom.

Over the last few months, a series of celebrations have taken place across the country to celebrate this milestone, which in September 1825 saw the opening of the Stockton and Darlington railway, connecting collieries near Shildon with Darlington and Stockton in County Durham. This was the world’s first public railway to use steam locomotives, and was the beginning of the modern railway as we know it.

SOCOTEC is a company with a rich, longstanding history of working within the rail sector, having been involved in the opening of the UK’s first railway laboratory in Crewe in 1864. Initially set up to analyse water used in steam locomotives and to test the new material that had been introduced for use in rails, steel. The use of steel went on to revolutionise the railway network in the UK, enabling trains to run at higher speeds and have greater load capacities.
Here's a brief history of SOCOTEC’s scientific journey with the railway industry within the UK:
- 1864-Early 1900s: Chemistry departments set up by various independent rail companies. Services grew to encompass the testing of metals and alloys, coals, oils and greases (the forefathers of SOCOTEC’s Advance Chemistry team today)
- Mid-20th century: BR Research formed by the nationalised British Rail which incorporated the various regional laboratories as the Chemistry Division and later became SOCOTEC. BR Research developed dedicated sampling and site investigation teams to carry out routine sampling of water supplies, fuel tanks, effluent interceptors, water softeners and coolant mixing plants – which are still integral to SOCOTEC’s offering to the UK rail industry.
- 1970s– Early 1990s: The rebranded British Rail Scientific Services increased the range of services offered to include carriage cleaning expertise, winterisation preparedness, engine oil analysis and occupational hygiene services.
- Mid 1990s to Mid 2000s: Privatisation sees Scientific Services re-branded as Scientifics together with an expansion into radiological testing and air and emissions testing services.
- 2000s - 2010:Merger of Scientifics with other Inspicio PLC companies to form Environmental Scientifics Group (ESG) allowing a further increase of service offerings such as materials testing, geotechnical ground investigations, “conland” consultancy and water hygiene services. SOCOTEC also becomes a RISQS-approved supplier in the UK, enabling direct support for major rail projects like Crossrail and HS1.
- 2010s: Launch of the Railway Environmental Forum, fostering collaboration on environmental and health and safety compliance and management in the rail sector.
- 2017: We become part of the SOCOTEC Group, which then from this period onwards allow us to offer more services to the rail sector; H&S services, Fire Engineering and Building Pathology to name just a few.
- 2020s: Integration of digital tools, BIM strategies, and smart monitoring systems. With SOCOTEC offering full lifecycle support from Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) to operation and maintenance.
- 2024–2025: SOCOTEC solidifies its position as a top provider in testing and inspection not only in the UK but as part of SOCOTEC Group across Europe and the US, with a focus on resilience, sustainability, and regulatory compliance
Across the last 160 years, SOCOTEC has developed a range of comprehensive service offerings to serve and support the rail sector:
