The Future of Earthworks Monitoring to be Showcased at ICE Lecture

    Thu 11/10/2018 - 04:03

‘Priming the Industry: An Innovation in Earthworks Monitoring’

The increasing number and severity of failures in flood defences, transportation and utilities earthworks - predominantly due to extreme weather and aging assets - has driven the development of a new geophysical ground monitoring system called PRIME (Proactive Infrastructure Monitoring and Evaluation). This innovative technology which enables asset owners to 'see inside' vulnerable earthworks, providing early warnings of asset deterioration, will be showcased at an event hosted by SOCOTEC and subsidiary ITM Monitoring, at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London on Monday 26th November.

Developed by the BGS Geophysical Tomography Team in close collaboration with a steering group of industry experts - including Network Rail, Canals and Rivers Trust, London Underground and ITM Monitoring - PRIME has been developed to provide a new remote condition monitoring and decision-support system for assessing the internal physical condition of safety critical geotechnical assets, such as embankments, cuttings and dams.

At the event, Professor Jonathan Chambers – principal geophysicist and leader of the BGS Geophysical Tomography Team – will introduce the PRIME technology, explaining the cost and risk benefits of it being used in the management of major assets. Delegates will have the opportunity to share views on how this technology might benefit their engineering discipline and discuss engineering challenges with industry experts during a panel session chaired by Philip Ball, group technical director at SOCOTEC.

If you’re a geotechnical specialist, a hydrogeologist or an asset owner, we invite you to register your interest for this key event to hear about how this innovative technology could assist you in better understanding the behaviour of your assets.
