SOCOTEC's approach to flow monitoring encompasses lots of different applications, with the firm recognising flow monitoring as a critical component of asset integrity management and risk mitigation

Through the strategic acquisition of flow monitoring and water quality monitoring specialists IETG, in November 2023, SOCOTEC hugely enhanced its wastewater remote monitoring capabilities, giving it the ability to provide comprehensive flow monitoring solutions for water infrastructure, and utility networks.

Critically, too, as part of its offering, SOCOTEC can help its clients meet stringent environmental regulations and the UK Government's revised 25 Year Environment Plan targets for reducing water pollution.

Due to the acquisition of IETG, SOCOTEC is now delivering ADS Triton+ Dual sensor technology across Yorkshire Water's Sewer Flow Monitoring Programme. This is due to the long-standing relationship IETG and ADS have. During AMP8, SOCOTEC will install 4,000 flow monitors throughout their sewer network.

This deployment transforms traditional monitoring with the use of unique dual-sensor technology – there’s no other floor monitor in the world that combines pipe invert (wetted) and soffit (dry) sensors, each utilising multiple measurement technologies.

The Triton+ Dual system has cut the average number of visits to hazardous confined space entries by up to 62.5% – from between six to eight visits, to just three. This is due to the self-checking dual sensor technology, which is far more worker safety-friendly when compared to traditional single-sensor deployments.

In turn, this reduces disruptive site visits, resulting in fewer road closures, less community disturbance and minimal service interruptions.

The environment benefits too, through decreased maintenance vehicle journeys, measurably reduced carbon emissions and more efficient resource utilisation.

The project with Yorkshire Water cut the number of confined space entries into sewers, as well as reducing the time required to manually download/ collect recorded data, which in turn has increased data confidence.

The Triton+ Dual system’s design ensures technologies are continuously cross-checking one another, to deliver exceptional data accuracy which better informs wastewater management decisions.

By deploying multiple sensing technologies to work together in tandem, such as combining ultrasonic and electromagnetic sensors, continuous monitoring can be ensured, even if one sensor fails or experiences interference. This redundancy is particularly crucial in infrastructure applications where downtime can result in significant safety or environmental risks.

SOCOTEC's dual sensing approach provides cross-validation of measurements, significantly improving accuracy compared to single-sensor systems. This enhanced precision is essential for clients facing strict regulatory compliance requirements, as well as those seeking to optimise operational efficiency.

The company's dual sensor systems enable the early detection of sensor degradation or system anomalies, allowing for proactive maintenance scheduling. This approach aligns with SOCOTEC's broader management strategy, helping clients transition from reactive to predictive maintenance strategies.

Through the addition of advanced geospatial solutions, SOCOTEC is now able to fully integrate surveying and mapping capabilities, which ultimately allows for comprehensive infrastructure monitoring that combines flow data with spatial analysis.

By combining traditional TIC services with advanced monitoring technologies, SOCOTEC is uniquely positioned to serve clients facing increasing environmental regulations amid the challenges posed by climate change.

SOCOTEC's strategic investments in flow monitoring technology and dual sensing capabilities reflect the company's understanding of evolving market needs.

The company's integrated approach to flow monitoring, encompassing everything from initial assessment and system design to ongoing monitoring and maintenance, positions SOCOTEC as a trusted partner for organisations navigating the complex landscape of modern flow measurement and monitoring requirements.
