About George Melo
George has over 10 years’ experience in the construction industry. He has worked on projects and in dispute resolution across a broad spectrum of sectors, including oil and gas (downstream and upstream), power generation, offshore construction, processing plants, commercial, geothermal, and rail. George also has substantial experience in airport and pipeline segments.
He began his career as a site-based trainee for a contractor on substantial oil and gas EPC projects. He later became responsible for negotiations and quantification and control of activities that relate to contractual changes and non-contractual work, and eventually company engineering representative in international ICC arbitral proceedings, interfacing experts’ and factual witnesses’ work and providing analyses on quantum and delay.
Over the past 5 years, George has been deployed on behalf of employers, main contractors and subcontractors in a range of dispute resolution fora, including litigation and arbitration. He has assisted named expert witnesses on over 12 disputes, including matters of valuation of work performed, variations, costs arising from termination, changes in law, and acceleration, as well as claims regarding prolongation, increase of indirect resources (thickening), disruption, professional negligence, and complex combinations of these issues from small to billion-pound disputes.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, holding a Bachelor’s honours degree in Mechanical Engineering with a second specialisation in Petroleum, and has recently received his Master’s in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution, achieving a merit overall and distinction in his dissertation.
