Testing the Water for the Canal & River Trust with Five-Year Monitoring Contract

    Tue 26/07/2016 - 05:39

ESG, the UK’s leading provider of testing, inspection and compliance services, has won a five-year extension to its contract with the Canal & River Trust to provide independent sediment and water analysis and undertake environmental monitoring of permitted waste sites.

Under the terms of the contract, ESG will carry out sampling and analysis of canal and river water, as well as sediment and soils from waterways across England and Wales. ESG has been providing analytical services to the Canal & River Trust since 2012, and this agreement extends the partnership until 2021.

As part of the monitoring, ESG performs bespoke testing for total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) content and carries out specific carbon banding at its UKAS (No.1252) and MCERTS accredited laboratory in Bretby, Derbyshire. The organisation also undertakes field monitoring of permitted dredging sites, testing for gas and the water quality of ground and surface waters.

ESG offers specialist reporting, based on laboratory analysis and field work, to help inform the Canal & River Trust’s work in maintaining its waterways in England and Wales, so it can contribute to a healthier natural environment.

Nick Smith, national waste management surveyor at the Canal & River Trust, commented:

“It’s vital to have access to advanced laboratory analysis, so we can fully understand the health of the 2,000 miles of waterways in our care.”

Zoë Cooper, business development director, Energy & Waste Services at ESG, added: “The UK’s waterways provide a diverse and complex ecological system. If steps aren’t taken to monitor and clean the water and sediment, there is a heightened risk of contamination from agricultural and industrial waste that could impact on local wildlife, as well as people living nearby.

“Through our continued work with the Trust, we help them to ensure our waterways offer safer habitats for wildlife, as well as provide the best possible conditions for local communities to enjoy these resources.”
