Employees can be faced with many hazardous substances in the workplace. It is imperative to ensure that your organisation is operating with DSEAR compliance to guarantee the safety of workers.
What is DSEAR?
The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) is a set of regulations requiring employers and the self-employed to implement control measures to reduce the risks to safety from fire, explosions, substances corrosive to metals and other hazardous materials.
Reducing the risk of dangerous substances
Dangerous substances can be found in nearly all workplaces and include such things as solvents, paints, varnishes, flammable gases such as liquid petroleum gas (LPG), dusts from machining and sanding operations, dusts from foodstuffs, pressurised gases and substances which are corrosive to metal.
We can support your business by implanting safety measures that eliminate DSEAR risks, including:
- Workplace design
- Specific measures for processes which involve deliberate combustion
- Safe systems of work.
Is a DSEAR assessment a legal requirement?
DSEAR is a legal requirement, and a risk assessment should be conducted every three to five years, or when there has been a significant change in process or materials or following an incident. It is encouraged to conduct a DSEAR risk assessment early in the event of a near miss or process change.
