Member of SOCOTEC’s Water Team Co-Authors Academic Study

    Thu 09/10/2020 - 15:20

Elizabeth Wilkinson, graduate consultant for SOCOTEC’s Water Treatment & Equipment team, co-authored an article published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

The article, entitled An Investigation of the Antileishmanial Properties of Semi-Synthetic Saponins, explores the possibility of using saponin compounds to help create a vaccine or drug therapy for the tropical disease leishmaniasis, which currently affects 12m people per year.

Elizabeth became a co-author of the paper as a result of her heavy involvement in the research during the third year of her degree and the internship she completed the following summer. This comprised the synthesis of saponins and the comparison of different reaction routes to establish which was the most effective, with some of the findings from this research included in the article.

During her day-to-day role as a graduate consultant, Elizabeth works across a variety of cooling tower and closed system sites situated in the North of England and North Wales, compiling a report for each based on her findings and advising the clients of any recommendations for the given system.

Mick Pratt, commercial director, Water, SOCOTEC UK: “Elizabeth is an integral member of the Water Treatment & Equipment team, with a strong academic background subsequently proven through co-authoring this RSC publication.

“We would like to congratulate Elizabeth for all of her hard work and wish her every success as she continues to develop her level of expertise within the business.”
