SOCOTEC Promotes National Safe Digging Week

17 September 2020

SOCOTEC is helping to raise awareness of National Safe Digging Week, a campaign aimed at educating consumers and professionals alike on safe digging practices

Taking place from Monday 21 to Sunday 27 September, LSBUD's National Safe Digging Week is designed to keep those working around a utility safe, helping to protect the UK’s underground infrastructure and ensure fewer asset strikes, delays and disruptions.

When ground is broken and underground utilities such as gas pipes, electricity cables and drains are hit and damaged, those working around the area may be susceptible to injury or even fatality, while the company overseeing the works would have serious repercussions in terms of financial and reputational damage. Being able to excavate safely is crucial for any construction project, which is why it is so important to adhere to safe digging practices at all times.

SOCOTEC’s Ground Investigation team uses the latest underground utility detection and mapping technology to accurately determine the location of all buried services, including Stream C, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Radio Frequency Technology (RFT). All surveys are carried out to The Survey Association Level 4 or BSI PAS128 specifications, as well as being fully compliant with HSG47 guidance.

Similarly, SOCOTEC Monitoring provides utility monitoring services using quality assured, state-of-the-art instrumentation, as well as its online monitoring software, Calyx OMS, all of which help to provide early warning of potential displacements or deformation caused by construction activities.

“Locating and reducing the risk of striking underground utilities on site is integral to the smooth running of site investigation projects, which is why our staff work hard to ensure that utility surveys are consistently carried out in a safe, non-intrusive manner,” commented Clare Chapman, operations director, Ground Investigation, SOCOTEC.

“SOCOTEC is proud to be supporting National Safe Digging Week, which directly aligns with our commitment to providing a high quality site investigation services for our clients, with a particular focus on minimising ground-related uncertainty and risk.”
