SOCOTEC UK and Ireland’s Summer Environmental Conference marked its third edition with a two-day event at our headquarters in Burton-upon-Trent.
Taking place between 13-14 August 2025, a series of SOCOTEC staff and key speakers from across the industry spoke on a variety of topics, giving attendees the most up-to-date insights from the Environmental Science world.
This year, the primary focus of Day One, was to prepare delegates for the incoming Street Works UK Material Classification Protocol, which is a new set of regulations for companies to comply with while carrying out excavation and maintenance work on roads and infrastructure.
To help illustrate the importance of getting ready for the new Protocol, Street Works UK Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, Clive Bairsto CBE, was one of the keynote speakers. Clive broke down the various changes to be implemented by the new Protocol, as well as how the organisation reached it through various trial stages, as well as giving attendees the opportunity to provide feedback and ask questions.
“Day One of the Summer Environmental Conference was a great success. We were honoured to have Clive Bairsto CBE join us for a fascinating breakdown into the incoming changes, with the Street Works UK Protocol, and it was a pleasure to welcome so many of our delegates into our laboratories for guided tours, too.”

Other Day One highlights included Jim Clay, Managing Director for Environmental Science at SOCOTEC, open this year’s conference, welcoming attendees to SOCOTEC House, as well as a five-expert panel discussion with dignitaries from Clancy, Nexus ReGen, Soil Dri, Street Works UK and SOCOTEC.
Day Two saw sessions on alternative solutions take place, including our guest speakers from Willshees Waste and Recycling Ltd and Waste Management Services Hargreaves discussing RDF Production and RDF Movement. SOCOTEC’s own Trevor Worrall, Simon Rudd and Paul Walker all broke down subjects within their expertise, too.
“It was great to welcome so many delegates to SOCOTEC House for some really engaging conversations about alternative solutions.
“Our expert team were able to deliver on topics as diverse as criminal proceedings, commercial and legal considerations, as well as footprint services – giving our attendees industry-leading insights.”
Simon Rudd, Business Development Manager for Renewable Energy
