    Challenge

    River crossings represent some of the most vulnerable and strategically important assets within the UK's gas distribution networks. Unlike conventional buried assets, these crossings are exposed to a unique combination of environmental and operational risks that can compromise their integrity and operational reliability.

    Changes in river flow, bank erosion, scour, ground instability and vegetation encroachment can all adversely affect the condition of a crossing and the infrastructure supporting it. In many cases, the condition of the surrounding environment can be just as important as the condition of the pipe itself.

    The challenge was to assess the integrity and environmental condition of more than 75 river crossings across the UK, ensuring that gas network operators maintained confidence in asset performance, understood emerging risks, and could prioritise intervention activities effectively.

    Without regular inspection and assessment, river crossings remain vulnerable to progressive deterioration, with public safety and the resilience of the network at risk.

    Project Description and Background

    Working with gas network operators across the United Kingdom, SOCOTEC UK & Ireland undertook a comprehensive inspection programme covering more than 75 river crossings. The programme was designed to help verify assets, detect leaks, and provide a thorough assessment of conditions and environmental observations. This would help give a complete understanding of asset conditions, network risk and future intervention requirements.

    Solution

    SOCOTEC designed a river crossing inspection methodology using multi-skilled survey teams trained in both asset integrity assessment and environmental risk evaluation. Each crossing was subjected to a thorough integrity assessment designed to evaluate the pipeline and its surrounding environment.

    River crossings require regular inspection to ensure their continued safe operation and long-term integrity, as they are subjected to changing watercourses, erosion, scour, flooding, vegetation growth and third-party impacts.

    The programme itself was detailed and had a range of criteria which needed to be fulfilled in order to achieve success. This included verification of asset location and network records, a detailed inspection of marker posts and cathodic protection assets, visual assessment of exposed pipework and supporting structures, coating condition inspections where assets were visible and leakage detection surveys using industry-standard equipment.

    Riverbanks were also under close inspection, with stability, erosion and scour potential all considered. The encroachment of vegetation was identified, as well as accessibility issues, and a collection of photographic evidence and comprehensive asset condition records.

    Survey teams conducted systematic field assessments over 75 river crossing locations, comparing actual site conditions against historical asset records and evaluating asset condition and environmental context. Each crossing was assessed for structural integrity, operational status, environmental exposure, and potential future risk factors.

    The programme identified several environmental observations, including bank erosion that could expose buried infrastructure, vegetation growth restricting access and visibility. There were scour conditions noted that could undermine pipeline support, alongside exposed assets needing protective intervention, and gas leaks which were immediately escalated through emergency procedures.

    Asset records were updated to reflect current conditions, with accessibility and maintenance constraints documented, and operators received actionable intelligence to support risk-based investment decisions.

    Conclusion

    SOCOTEC delivered a river crossing integrity solution that provided gas network operators with valuable insight into both asset condition and emerging environmental risks.

    The programme successfully completed inspections of more than 75 river crossings across the UK, verified and updated asset records to reflect current conditions, recorded critical environmental observations affecting asset integrity, identified gas leaks and escalated them through emergency procedures, documented accessibility and maintenance constraints, and delivered improved confidence in network resilience and asset integrity.

    Through a structured programme of visual inspections, leakage detection and environmental assessment, the project delivered actionable intelligence that supports safer operations, improved resilience, risk-based investment decisions and the long-term protection of critical gas assets across the United Kingdom.
