Elevating Ash Fusion Testing to UKAS Accreditation for Enhanced Precision

    Wed 24/01/2024 - 03:51

From January 2024, our Renewable Energy service will be upgrading the former ash fusion test to a UKAS accredited test.

In a move towards enhanced precision and industry compliance, we have unveiled a new method for the determination of ash melting behaviour in solid fuels.

Aligned with leading industry standards, including BS EN ISO 21404 and PD CEN/TR 15404, this test provides essential insights into the fusion and melting behaviour of composite inorganic constituents in fuels. The procedure involves a gradual heating of ash samples from 900°C to temperatures exceeding 1500°C, offering valuable data on deformation, hemisphere, and flow temperatures.

One of the key advantages of this testing method is its ability to deliver critical information about the behaviour of fuels at high temperatures.

The comprehensive temperature determinations offered, including deformation, hemisphere and flow temperatures, ensure a thorough understanding of the composite inorganic constituents in fuels.

Our adherence to the highest standards is underlined by the UKAS accreditation. This accreditation guarantees that the testing is carried out by experienced professionals using calibrated equipment and validated methods, all assessed by independent technical experts.

SOCOTEC are active participants in the development of international industry standards through BSI/PT017 and representation of the UK on ISO Technical Committee’s TC238 – Solid Biofuels and TC300 – Solid Recovered Materials including Solid Recovered Fuels, with a long established involvement in method development for sampling, sample preparation, chemical and physical testing.
