Cooling Tower Management

SOCOTEC provides a comprehensive range of cooling tower management services to help clients fulfil their legal obligations and comply with HSE regulations.

The bacterium Legionella pneumophila can often be found in purpose-built water systems and with favourable conditions, the bacteria will multiply, increasing the risk of Legionnaires’ disease. It is essential to have appropriate measures in place to control the risk of Legionella bacteria in your cooling system, preventing potential outbreaks.

In addition to microbiological fouling, cooling systems can become inefficient through excessive water usage or if scale and corrosion are allowed to prevail.

SOCOTEC manages over 100 cooling towers throughout the UK and has extensive experience in manufacturing, food and beverage, healthcare (HTM04-01:2016), Government, and commercial premises. Our consultants can also carry out a UKAS accredited Legionella risk assessment of your water system. In addition, SOCOTEC provide assistance with any remedial works, if necessary, to ensure full compliance.

Our testing facilities are UKAS accredited. A list of our accredited activities can be found in our schedule of accreditation - Testing Facilities 1015.

Steam Raising Boilers

In accordance with BS 2486: 1997: Recommendations for treatment of water for steam boilers & water heaters, SOCOTEC supports clients and provides advice on the overall safety of operating the entire boiler water system.

We can assist in preventing deposition of salts and other unwanted debris, as well as minimising corrosion and degradation of wetted surfaces that come into contact with water, steam or condensation.

In addition to this, SOCOTEC can take the lead with the protocol of maintenance of high heat transfer efficiency within the boiler system and maintain the quality of any generated steam for any process applications.

Closed Water Systems

In closed water and glycol systems the waterside of heat exchangers and pipes are rarely seen. Problems such as corrosion, scaling and fouling can cause high energy consumption and poor heat transfer. It is therefore important that the system is commissioned and managed in accordance with BG29/50 and associated standard for sampling, BS8552. The entire system results are monitored, evaluated and trended by one of our highly trained consultants. This enables tailored treatment programmes to be implemented to prevent the deterioration of the systems and to allow them to perform at their optimum levels for many years. However, the use of Cobra hydro-cyclone separation can be a major asset in maintaining the cleanliness of these systems by removing corrosive matter, sludge and debris which are the major contributors associated with closed circuit systems.
