Why Test SRF/RDF?
Refuse is no longer viewed as a waste, it is fast becoming a product in its own right. For many years, people have understood the value of using waste as an energy source and with many landfills closing, organisations are looking for viable alternatives for their waste products. Waste is now viewed as an energy commodity and as with any commodity, not only do customers expect a consistent quality, there are also a myriad of rules and regulations around the quality that should be expected of this new product.
Why is it Important for the Fuels to be Consistent?
As well as customer expectation, there are now regulatory compliance considerations around RDF/SRF. Firstly, a Transfrontier Shipment of Waste licence, or TFS is needed if you are involved in the import or export of waste in the UK. Secondly, there will be a fuel specification for any EfW or renewable energy plant that is commercially generating energy. Finally, but for some, most importantly, to achieve maximum efficiency, the fuel needs to be of a consistent quality, so that it does not damage any equipment.
