Representing the single largest investment ever undertaken by the Port of Dover, the development contributes to the evolution of this key international gateway. Originally established in 1606, the Port of Dover is Europe’s busiest 24/7 roll-on-roll-off ferry port and handles trade goods to the value of £122bn annually.
The construction stage includes the design and build of two new deep-water berths including quay walls and land reclamation, a new marina pier, the marina curve, navigation channel and new lock gates, bascule bridge and capital dredging works.
Working in collaboration with VSBW and consulting engineer Ramboll, SOCOTEC Monitoring provided key value engineering to the monitoring package. By revising the pile monitoring instrumentation to a wireless system, SOCOTEC Monitoring enhanced the safety and accuracy deliverables of the scheme.
The initial I&M works provide the installation of in-place inclinometers within the listed Prince of Wales Pier as well as surface-mounted and submersible tilt meters with co-located prisms on the top of marine piles and existing port assets.
Data delivery will be through SOCOTEC Monitoring’s Calyx online data visualisation system, providing automated alerts and collated monitoring information 24/7 during the ongoing works.
