SOCOTEC Continues Environment Radiological Monitoring Support for Environment Agency

    Tue 03/13/2018 - 17:03

SOCOTEC, the UK’s leading provider of testing, inspection and compliance services, is continuing to support the Environment Agency with radiological sampling and radiochemical analytical support.

The three year contract, worth around £1million, will see SOCOTEC conduct independent monitoring of radioactivity in the environment on behalf of the Environment Agency. SOCOTEC – formerly ESG – has been providing radiological services to the Environment Agency since 2002, and this extended relationship demonstrates confidence in SOCOTEC’s technical expertise in radiation monitoring, sampling, analysis and interpretation capabilities.

The contract includes on-site radiation monitoring and radiochemical analysis of environmental samples taken from around nuclear licensed sites across England and Wales. This radiological monitoring programme ensures sites are undertaking activities in line with Environmental Permitting Regulations.

SOCOTEC’s monitoring for the Environment Agency provides an independent check on the regular monitoring, sampling and analysis carried out by individual nuclear facilities. The results are incorporated into the Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE) Report, published annually into the public domain detailing the radioactivity levels in food and the environment around the UK.

“We are very pleased to be able to continue our support in monitoring environmental radioactivity for the Environment Agency. SOCOTEC’s expertise, industry accreditation and extensive experience in sampling and testing for radioactivity in environmental samples means we can provide a responsive, flexible and complete service.

“The radiological monitoring we undertake provides information on the status of environmental radioactivity in England and Wales. This information is then used to assess doses to members of the public against the UK and European dose limits. We consider this work an important contribution to aiding the surveillance and protection of the environment for the health and wellbeing of the public.”
