Developed in collaboration with Brunel University London, and with assisted funding from Innovate UK, Protex! is a new water disinfection device, which uses a small electrical current to kill harmful bacteria in water systems without the requirement to dose chemicals. To our knowledge, Protex! is the only electrolytic disinfection unit of its type to receive WRAS approval in the UK. Protex! increases the efficiency of hot water systems as it allows water temperatures to be reduced, eliminating the need for Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs). Environmentally friendly in its approach, the use of Protex! can provide carbon emission reductions and energy cost savings of up to 20% with minimal maintenance.
Since 2008, the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) has been committed to safeguarding public health through the prevention of public water supply contamination, as well as ensuring efficient water use. Any water fitting that comes into contact with a public mains water supply must comply with the 'Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations' which can be demonstrated through WRAS approval.
ESG's WRAS approval was officially received on 21 October 2015, demonstrating the acceptance of Protex! by UK water supplier representatives.
Mick Pratt, commercial director – water treatment, Built Environment Services, ESG, commented: “WRAS approval illustrates ESG’s commitment to the highest quality standards and it is a significant stage in the development of Protex! We are excited at the prospect of taking the device to market, providing safe water and potentially saving millions of pounds in reduced energy costs.”
