The training, entitled ‘Electrolytic Disinfection: Eliminating harmful pathogens’, has been developed by Dr Giovanna Cossali and is delivered as an approved Continued Professional Development (CPD) seminar.
CIBSE promotes the career of building services engineers, by accrediting courses of study in further and higher education, approving work based training programmes and providing routes to full professional registration and membership. Once qualified, CIBSE offers a range of services, all focussed on maintaining and enhancing professional excellence throughout a career to its members.
Comprising an overview of water pathogens, the approved course identifies the problems they can cause in building water systems. Both Legionella and Pseudomonas bacteria are highlighted including their mode of transmission and the infections which can be contracted. This is followed by a critical overview of typical hot water treatments, such as heat treatment, chlorination, chloramination, chlorine dioxide and copper-silver. Electrolytic disinfection (ED) is then introduced as an alternative hot water treatment method, and both the benefits and limitations of the technology are discussed.
The seminar also details the results of the long-term monitoring of one of ESG’s ED systems installed at a healthcare centre, in addition to experiments undertaken at a purpose built hot water system at Brunel University, London. Partly funded by the UK government’s Innovate UK scheme, the project has been overseen by Professor Tassos Karayiannis, Dr Edwin Routledge, and Martin Ratcliffe from Brunel.
Mick Pratt, commercial director, Built Environment Services, ESG, commented: “We’re proud to have been recognised by CIBSE as a CPD provider. This allows us to continue to showcase our expertise in electrolytic disinfection and support our clients in their understanding of the latest water treatment industry developments.”
